Santa Fe 2900
Class 4-8-4
The AT&SF used its 4-8-4s for passenger service. Since
its main line stretching over 2200 miles (Chicago to California), the
AT&SF had a real need for excellent motive power.
Convinced that the Northerns could handle its needs, AT&SF ordered
11 more in 1938 with 80" drivers (known as Class 3765 and included
road numbers 3765 through 3775) with another 10 ordered in 1941 (Class
3776, including road numbers 3776 through 3785)
The last group of 30 were built in 1943 and 1944. Wartime shortages of
material resulted in ordinary metals being used for their construction. As
a result, they were the heaviest Northerns ever built. They out weighed
their nearest rivals by over 2000 pounds. This group was known as Class
2900 and included road numbers 2900 through 2929.

The railroad owning the largest number of Mikados (1,350
system wide) was the New York Central . As of January 1, 1946, the system
had 921 2-8-2s on its roster.
Finally, there were 302 class H10 Mikados, which some consider the
precursor to the "Lima Super-Power" design.
Sunset Models is bringing you the "Super-Power" Mikado to you
in "SUPER DETAIL". Also lettered for P&LE. Choose from
version A or B. The difference between versions a and b are minor piping
detail differences and appliances. The significance of version a over
b is that it has never been modeled in 2 Rail before. Neither
version have been modeled in 3 Rail.

C&NW H-1 4-8-4
The Chicago & North Western needed more motive power for its main line
operations and in 1929 received 35 very large 4-8-4s from the Baldwin
Locomotive Works. These Class H Northerns (road numbers 3001 through 3035)
were put to work replacing double-headed Pacifics on fast freight and
passenger trains.
Because of their size and weight, these new locomotives were restricted
to the 488 mile Omaha - Chicago main line. They were some of the largest
4-8-4s ever built weighing in at 498,000 pounds. The tractive effort was
65,200 lbs at a boiler pressure of 250 psi as originally delivered, but
later the pressure was raised to 275 psi increasing the tractive effort to
71,800 lbs. The drivers were 76" in diameter and the cylinders were
27" x 32".
In 1940. the entire fleet underwent a rebuild to include lightweight
rods, boxpok drivers and roller bearings on all axles. In the late 1940s,
24 of them underwent another rebuild and were given new nickel - steel
frames, new cylinders, pilot beams and air reservoirs, new fireboxes and
many other minor improvements. These were reclassified as Class H-1. (from

VIRGINIAN AE
2-10-10-2
These ten locomotives were built in 1918 by ALCo for the
Virginian Railway. Due to size limitations en route, the locomotives were
delivered without cab or the front, low pressure cylinders, which were
installed on site. The low pressure cylinders at 48 inch (1.22 m) diameter
were the largest ever used on a US locomotive; they had to be tilted
slightly upward to provide sufficient clearance.
As can be seen in the photograph, the tenders fitted were unusually
small; this was to enable them to fit on the Virginian Railway's
turntables. (wikipedia)
